EPL Results: Berbatov sent Manchester United to top of EPL table
Manchester United raced to the pole position for the first time this season after a late goal by Dimitar Berbatov. The defending champions found it tough to break through a stubborn Bolton side in an away match.
It took them 21 games to take over the top spot from Liverpool. However it could be short-lived if Liverpool beat Everton today and regain the lead. With the latest 1-0 EPL result, United has now equalled Chelsea’s record of 10 straight clean-sheets in the English Premier League.
Without some first team players (e.g. Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand etc), United looked unconvincing for most of yesterday’s game. Bolton did look like having a real chance of causing another upset.
Last season, Bolton beat United 1-0. Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen put up a brillant show by denying United attack force on several occasions. Notably, the newly crowned Fifa Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo effort in the 35th minutes was palmed away by Jaaskelainen. Eight minutes later, Ronaldo’s free kick was again denied by Man-of-the-Match goalkeeper.
With Bolton defending strongly, it took United till the final minute to snatch a late winner. Argentinian striker Berbatov met Carlos Tevez’s cross to head in from close distance.
